It can be annoying if you are a frequent user of the number pad keys when you log into your PC as by default, NUM lock is turned off on the logon screen. This is even more annoying now that Windows 10 is promoting logging in with a PIN when everyone goes through the initial setup.
The easiest way to enable number lock on the Windows 10 lock screen is to download and import this registry key by double clicking it after download.
Alternatively, If you want to do it the manual way, follow these steps:
1. Click on the Start Button and type inregedit and hit Enter.
2. Navigate through HKEY_USERS, .DEFAULT, Control Panel and then Keyboard.
3. Right click on InitialKeyboardIndicators and select Modify.
4. Set the value to2147483650 and click OK. Alternatively, some user have had success with just setting the value to2.
5. Reboot and number lock should now be enabled.
Still not working?
There appears to be a bug with the boot process properly reading this setting when the fast startup feature of Windows 10 is enabled. Fast startup is a useful feature that shaves a few seconds off your boot time by hibernating a portion of the boot process. As this hibernation image was created prior to the InitialKeyboardIndicators setting change, that may explain why the updated value is not properly loaded. You can turn off fast startup in Power Options and turn it back on later very easily.
1. Click on the Start Button and type in Power Options.
2. Select Choose what the power buttons do.
3. Hit Change settings that are currently unavailable.
4. Under Shutdown settings, remove the check next to Turn on fast startup and then hit the Save changes button.

Hi es5899,
I have tried your very detailed steps above to no avail. Thanks for your very articulate and clear response!!
I used both the registry link, went into regedit and checked the setting, disabled fast start up.. when none of that worked I changed the setting to "2".. still didn't work. I really miss my 10 key! Hopefully MS will allow us to have it back one day... I think I may just have to escape to apple if something doesn't come along soon. Again, many thanks for the reply.

I Reset The Regedit as above, 48 to 50, and Turned Off The Fast Load under Power Button Options. I Find though that Windows Resets The Power Button Options Every Time Windows Up-Dates. I Have to Go Back To control Panel every Time I get an Up-Date.

Update: It seems that Microsoft has finally fixed this issue. In W10 v.1607 compilation 14393.576 numlock key is enabled at the startup.
Update 2 (15th January 2017): Bad news, it doesn't work again, (W10 v.1607 14393.693). When it did, I noticed there were some booting troubles.

The fastboot was the issue, thank you!

Interesting. The major update I received did not fix the NumLock problem for me - had to go back in and disable Fastboot again so the NumLock key would remain active at boot up - and it broke Edge, lol. Well, didn't break Edge, but I play the word games on various on line game sites, like MSN Games, and the keyboard will not work to select letters in the games. Only thing that works is the spacebar. The keyboard works fine for everything else, online and offline. I am now using Chrome because it will allow me to use the keyboard in games.

Today, I had a brief encounter with Malware, but managed to fix the problem. Everything seems to be working normally--with the exception of my numlk key. It is not working. Can someone help me? Also, I have no idea how to "check the registry..."
